Overtime, I have had to shift my mindset.
People stare because they are not used to seeing kids like Rylen. It's unfamiliar and people are curious. However, that doesn't always make it easier, but it helps create a little more grace. Still, even with understanding the why behind it, doesn't erase how it feels.
It brings feelings like anxiety, stress, and moments of just wanting to stay home because that feels safe.
However - here is what I have learned:
This is our reality.
And hiding from it, doesn't change it.
So, we showed up anyway! Not because it was always easy, but because it matters. He is meant to be seen, just like everyone else!
Every time we get out, we are not just living our lives, we are also quietly educating the world around us. We are helping people see that children with limb differences or physical disabilities do exist.
That they belong. That they deserve to be out in the world just like anyone else.
Never be afraid to be seen!
